Many have argued that speed would never become a ranking factor and many hoped it wouldn’t but today Google announced once and for all the speed is a ranking factor and why it is so.

Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We use a variety of sources to determine the speed of a site relative to other sites.

I wrote a complete list of Google tips to speed up your website at which is much more detailed than this post.

As we can there is a lot of proof that website speed is important for website owners and for the users of our websites and users of Google’s search service.

What do we do now? There are a few things you can do but the first job you should take care of is determining how long  your site to load by checking your page speed, which scripts or files are being called and loaded make the necessary changes to the areas that are causing your site to load slow.

My only question would is how much of a ranking factor is speed going to be? We need to know. If it’s not the heaviest ranking factor we can at least reduce the panic of webmasters worldwide. Let’s see if we’ll hear more about this from Google in the near future.
